More than 400 workers, about 10 years of underground construction work in the high mountains, 17 km of tunnels and 1.7 million cubic meters of excavated rock: the Nant de Drance construction site was gigantic.
The result is one of the most powerful pumped storage power plants in Europe. With a capacity of 900 MW, it will generate around 2.5 billion kWh of electricity per year. Testing of the wet parts will start in 2019 and commissioning will take place gradually from 2020.

Challenges
In order to be able to use the pumped storage power plant as flexibly as possible, the storage capacity of the Vieux-Emosson reservoir was doubled. To achieve this, the existing dam had to be raised by 20 metres. A total of 68,000 cubic metres of concrete, distributed over 475 blocks, each one and a half metres high and twelve metres long on each side, were placed for the increase. In order to create a solid foundation, the existing 45 meter high wall was partially removed.
