Metro Line 2 - Mashhad, Iran - 2009-2011

Project, Contract and Procurement Management FIDIC

Image

The Mashhad Metro Line 2 adds up to 14 km with 12 stations; the average distance between two adjacent stations is 1’410 m, with the longest being 1’550 and the shortest 799 m. The average depth of the stations is between 15 and 20 m. From the available sketches it appears that only one tube accommodates the two tracks.

All procurement activities were defined, planned and controlled by use of a procurement tracking system. All equipment and bulk material were allocated to requisitions and purchase orders. During the entire procurement cycle, up to the arrival on the construction site, the status of equipment and materials were controlled and monitored. The procurement cycle to subcontract parts of the works to third parties were tracked with the procurement tracking system.

Challenges

The cultivation of relationship between the parties involved were big challenges that had to be mastered. The communication skills of the project manager had a big influence on the effectiveness of the procurement phase. This could only be mastered if the Project Manager and the local project and construction management worked hand in hand.
